Step into the heart of Istanbul’s storied past with our immersive Istanbul Old City Tour, a journey through the neighborhoods where empires rose, sultans ruled, and merchants from across the world once gathered. This full-day walking experience reveals the city’s most iconic monuments, as well as the quieter courtyards, markets, and streets that still preserve the soul of old Constantinople.
Your tour begins at the magnificent Sultanahmet Square, built on the ancient Hippodrome of Constantinople. Here you’ll see centuries of history layered together, from Egyptian obelisks to Byzantine columns, and hear the stories of chariot races, imperial ceremonies, and political intrigue that once animated this grand arena.
We continue to the breathtaking Blue Mosque, famed for its elegant domes and six slender minarets. Step inside to admire its shimmering blue İznik tiles and stained-glass windows, while your guide explains the traditions of Ottoman architecture and Islamic art that shaped this masterpiece. Just across the square stands the Hagia Sophia, a marvel of engineering and spirituality for nearly 1,500 years. As you explore its vast interior, you’ll discover glittering mosaics, colossal columns, and the unique blend of Byzantine and Ottoman heritage that makes Hagia Sophia one of the world’s great cultural crossroads.
Next, descend beneath the streets into the mystical Basilica Cistern, an underground forest of marble columns and softly rippling water that once supplied the Byzantine palace. Back at street level, you’ll stroll through atmospheric lanes to the Grand Bazaar, one of the oldest and largest covered markets on earth. Lose yourself in a maze of shops offering handwoven carpets, jewelry, ceramics, leather, spices, and more, while your guide shares tips on bargaining and the history of Ottoman trade.
After a short lunch break at a traditional local restaurant, the tour continues to the graceful Süleymaniye Mosque complex, crowning one of Istanbul’s seven hills. Enjoy sweeping views over the Golden Horn as you learn about Mimar Sinan, the legendary architect who defined the city’s skyline. Your day concludes with a walk down to the Spice Bazaar area, where the perfumes of saffron, sumac, and Turkish delight fill the air, offering a fragrant finale to your exploration.
By the end of the Istanbul Old City Tour, you won’t just have seen the landmarks—you’ll understand the stories, people, and traditions that have shaped this extraordinary city for over 1,700 years.
